Begin with the End in Mind

Now a common phrase elevated practically to buzzword, “Begin with the End in Mind” is number two on Steven Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”.  In short, it’s a catchy phrase reminding people, whether in business or in life, to set a goal and justify or reject all pursuits on the basis of whether they will take you closer to or farther from achieving that goal.  It is also recommended that milestones be defined between that end point and the current situation, in order to establish a plan for successful achievement of the goal and identify the most appropriate and necessary next steps.   Some have suggested writing your own epitaph or eulogy, and then strive daily to live up to it.  The corollary is that if you don’t know where you’re headed, it’s a certainty that you’ll never arrive.

As for me, my ultimate end is Heaven, and Jesus has that part covered.  Just shy of Heaven, it is my intent to have introduced several people, specifically D/deaf people, to the gospel of Christ and the warnings of things to come on planet Earth.  In order to accomplish that, which I believe to be a Divine calling, I intend to be in full-time ministry to the D/deaf community.  Full-time ministry precludes a traditional full-time paying job, thus I’ll need to generate funding from somewhere in order to maintain the necessities of roof & food, not to mention repayment of school loans.  For purposes of this course, then, my end goal is a business and fundraising account which will bring in sufficient money to cover living and repayment expenses, along the lines of $2k monthly.  Due to world conditions and a health issue, I expect this income will be necessary for no more than 20-25 years.  In 20 years, I will be eligible to draw from what remains in Social Security and my IRA/401K investments.

The business, Stained Glass, is a collection of various marketable skills that I have. These include office administration and clerical services; database design, development, and maintenance; first level computer technical support; clowning, vocal music, sewing, and creative writing; elder, child, and pet care; youth mentorship and tutoring; and the sale of novelty mugs, hats, stickers, etc., as well as affiliate marketing on a blog site.  Upon graduation and certification, I will be qualified to add Sign Language Interpreting at the top of the list.  Traditional deputation-style fundraising among deaf and hearing churches will likely be unavoidable.

The name Stained Glass is metaphorical, with several devotional applications, thus it serves not only as a name but as a conversation starter and ministerial lead-in.  This lead-in is precisely what will fulfill my actual end goal of presenting the gospel to those who, literally, have not heard it.
