A couple of lifetimes ago, a coworker brought in some really great Christmas CDs. This was the third year that a group of friends had put together some songs in fine style. Sale proceeds were to go toward one of the families dealing with cancer, and then to cancer research itself. Due to the cause, the material, the quality of the albums, and my financial strength at the time, I bought a copy of each year’s CD. I’m now 3 behind, if anyone wants to get me caught up.
I don’t know how, but today’s the first time I recall hearing their song, “How Can This Be Christmas?”. Thankfully, the group’s still up & running (see website), and I found info on this very thought-provoking piece.
One singer asks how a humble stable could represent Christmas, where were the carols and snowmen and tinsel on trees? Another singer asks how reindeer and stockings could represent Christmas, where were the shepherds and star? Where is the real meaning and representation of Christmas, in these very opposite scenes?
Go for it – buy the CD, fund a good cause, enjoy great music, and think about how Christmas can be best represented in your life.
14. How Can This Be Christmas
Laura Darnell – Lead, Backing Vocals
Roark Jones – Lead. Backing Vocals
Scott Allen – Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Synth, Suspended Cymbal, Chime
Words and music by Scott Allen – Copyright 2004.
Recorded and mixed at Allen Recording, Elkhart, IN.
Scott and Dave Clo attended college together. Dave had heard Scott’s song and asked if we could use it for our project. Scott wrote this song for a Christmas program for his church (River Oaks Community Church) in 2004. It’s about two completely different concepts of what Christmas is all about. It is very special that we have Laura performing for our project as she is a breast cancer survivor.
