Assignment: Take a known story and express a portion of it in the various communication styles – y’know, narrative, persuasive, etc… Enjoy.
Impromptu – Excuse me, everyone, may I have your attention? We expect the false alarms regarding wolf attacks to come to an end. Unfortunately, this is because the shepherd and his sheep were attacked today, without defense. The boy succumbed to his injuries a few hours ago.
Storytelling – Once there was a shepherd boy who tended his sheep on the hills outside the city. Every day, he would cry out that wolves were attacking, and every day the townspeople would rush to save him and his precious sheep. He laughed at the funny people with their pitchforks and water pails, until one day, the people ignored his cries. That day, there really were wolves, but the people stayed at their businesses. The wolves had a big lunch, and the boy never cried wolf again.
Informative – We regret to announce that the young man attacked by wolves earlier today has passed away. The authorities have asked us to remind everyone that it is very important to use the alarm system only in the case of a real emergency.
Poetry –
There once was a boy who tended sheep
Every day he tried not to sleep
‘Wolf! Wolf!’ he would yelp
Begging people to help
Then laugh as with pitchforks they’d leap
The people he tricked all got mad
They agreed that this boy was bad
‘Til one day he cried
And they all thought he lied
So they stayed home and became very sad
News-casting – Tonight the community mourns the loss of a shepherd boy who was attacked by wolves earlier today. After several days of false alarms, the boy’s cries today went unheeded.
Persuasive – It is very important to tell the truth. To illustrate, recall the story of the boy who cried wolf when the sheep were perfectly safe. One day the townspeople ignored his cries, only to find, sadly, that he was finally telling the truth. Take a lesson from this young man and never lie.
Entertaining – So this boy got a kick out of crying wolf and watching the townspeople trip over each other to save him, pitchforks glistening in the summer sun. By the time the townspeople caught on, so had the wolves. The moral? Lying Bites!
Specialized – Wolves are carnivores, meat eaters, and are capable of running at great rates of speed. Sheep run comparatively slowly, and having fallen, cannot regain their footing without external assistance. Townspeople are very protective, until they find that their time and energy has been wasted. It is for these reasons that the foolish young man who called false alarms, and his sheep, were overcome by wolves and destroyed.
Ceremonial – Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered today to honor the life of a young man and his many sheep, lost in tragic dishonesty. Let us pray for wisdom and protection from the forces of wolves.
